Nutrition & Physical Health

Teaching youth the importance of healthy habits, fitness, and proper nutrition for lifelong success.

Why This Matters

Access to healthy food, nutritional education, and opportunities for physical activity play an important role in long-term health. In many underserved communities, families face barriers that make it harder to consistently access nutritious foods and reliable health education. As a result, these communities often experience higher rates of preventable health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and obesity.

Research shows that socio-economic disparities can significantly affect both adult and children’s health outcomes (Food Research & Action Center, 2017). Addressing these challenges early helps young people develop healthier habits that support their well-being throughout their lives.

Program Overview

The Nutrition & Physical Health program helps youth and families better understand how nutrition and physical activity support overall well-being. Participants learn about balanced nutrition, the importance of fueling their bodies properly, and how everyday food choices influence energy, growth, and long-term health.

During program activities, healthy snacks such as fresh seasonal fruit and nutritious meals are often provided. These experiences reinforce how simple, healthy food choices can support both physical and mental performance.

Physical Activity Through Boxing & Family Fitness

Physical activity is a core component of the Knights in the Ring program. Through boxing-based fitness activities, youth are introduced to engaging ways to stay active while building strength, coordination, discipline, and confidence. To help families build healthy routines together, the program also offers Knights in the Ring Family Fitness, a family-friendly training session where parents or guardians can participate alongside their child. These sessions create opportunities for families to move together, support one another, and reinforce healthy habits at home.

Parents and guardians can participate free of charge when attending with a participating youth. The goal is to create a welcoming environment where families learn, train, and build healthier lifestyles together.
